Gesture drawing

For gesture drawing I would want the class to have a sketch book to practice during and at home. Assign per homework 5 gesture studies with atleast a sentence documenting the time used to make the drawing. Example. Here is a gesture of my coke can, I used a pencil and sketched a 30 second study.

7 L's of Gesture drawing. Provide by Grad School professor. Draw in a way that captures ACTION.

  1. Draw Loosely
  2. Draw Lightly
  3. Draw Lines of Action (like something tight or being tugged)
  4. Draw Lines of Rhythm (like folds in cloth and leg movement)
  5. Draw Long
  6. Draw Large
  7. Draw Lively

Gesture using a yard stick and sharpie

Depending on the class maturity level like what my teacher said in college. Have a nudity figure drawing cd rom or and dressed one. Still choose a figure that covers certain areas all though they are nude.

This lesson plan should also begin with newspaper paper and work the students up to a nicer set of paper.

To begin the lesson I could volunteer to be sketched and then after a couple of rounds have each student get up and pose. To make it fun, possibly have them on the desks if its safe.
Day 2 of gesture drawing could be an option of detailing a piece of the image to their liking.

A final project will an exceptional completion of a gesture using chalk or conte crayons. Large image. Make a crazy gestural face or a shot of the whole body. For the students that do not want to do a self portrait or draw a class member I will also have a still life set up in the room.

Discipline/perspective drawing

I would first give an introduction for helping the student understand perspective drawing. A series of examples would be shown such as how my instructor set her blog up for my 760 course.

Here I found some tips written

In one point perspective, surfaces that face the viewer appear as their true shape, without any distortion. They are drawn using primarily horizontal and vertical lines, as illustrated by the diagram below:

Surfaces that travel away from the viewer, on the other hand, converge towards a single ‘vanishing point‘. This is a point that is located directly in front of the viewer’s eyes, on a ‘horizon line.

Key Points:
  • Surfaces that face the viewer are drawn using their true shape
  • Surfaces that travel away from the viewer converge towards a single vanishing point

I also may use block letter assignment using perspective. I think maybe the assignment will go for 4 to 5 class periods. Or if not just 3 class periods and the students have to finish in their own time at home.

Blog entry #2 Contour procedures

Describe procedures for how you will teach contour drawing skills to young adults following through to how you would have them complete a successful work of art using contour skills. Use as many images as you need.

To help get the rust off from your new students I would hand out a series of contour drawings  many may recognize.

First I would have them draw from their non-drawing hand. Then they would draw the other hand using a pencil or sharpie.

I would have them draw 3 images of their non drawing hand.

After many of them feel as though they did not do well, I'll then show mine to the class and make a remark that these exercise are not meant to look masterful, but a certain stylistic skill. If I showed mine after each exercise then maybe on the first day of class they will feel less intimidated and see how everybody is on the same page on opening day.

The next exercise will be to draw images of handouts I will then give to each table and the student must draw the image upside down.

I'll walk around the room to make sure there is no peeking and cheating.
This contour exercise is to help students just see the lines as they are and to not group what they are drawing into arms, legs or an eye. This semi-blind study is meant to break down inhibitions and draw what they see and not from the mind.

Again when they are finish with the exercise I will then show mine to the class so they can see that the teacher is kind of on the same level. I want to make the students comfortable and then give a small speech on how not everyone is at equal drawing skills and yet they are. I want to explain how my classroom will teach assignments that will delve outside students comfort zones and broaden their able skill sets.

Other ideas given from my Grad class that I could implement are
Silhouette
outline
blind contour
modified contour.

Draw 5 blind contours and 5 modified contours of the hands in various positions will be the next exercise before class ends. The students cannot make a Bird drawing and I'll be sure to tell them ahead of time.

If the students create a set of nice contour drawings from the day 1 exercise I may change the next class periods lesson to continue those that were good. This option may come from an intermediate course as a thought and then have them make part of the contour drawing highly detailed and the rest in its earliest structure.

Blog 1# first day of classes

Blog 1.

Give yourself advice for the first day of classes teaching adolescents.

I would pass around paper for the students to write their names down and once done have them introduce themselves and name one hobby they like to do. I need to own the classroom the best I can when I begin. People say you become a quasi rockstar status because the art teacher is expected to be the most fun and an escape for students from their other courses. I'll have to play nice with other faculty members and play the game. I should only assume that all schools have this inter turmoil politics going on. I will have to learn how to say "no" sometimes to these adolescents. I may feel under appreciated with adolescents but I should know that it's them I am trying to teach. I have to stay on top of everyone else schedules probably such as gym assembly's, pep rally's, or standard testing If I teach in a high school. I may be the only male art teacher on the hall and it may be wise to stay out of gossip.

Projects will flop as a first year teacher or beyond. I should complete a contour exercise that was given to me just recently to work the rust off my students. This exercise will involve flipping an image upside down and so the students just draw the lines they see and not group the image to what they want to see such as eyes, arms, etc. Blind drawing wouldn't be a bad thing. I should practice a daily routine of how students enter, clean-up, and valuable work time. I need to figure out a clean classroom set up. I bet I'll eat my lunch period really quickly and hardly sit down most of the day. Hopefully one when I teach I know that I am different from the others. Art teachers are a bit off, atleast I feel quirky and off. I think I need to embrace that and be myself whether that's the typical stereotype people expect of an art teacher to say or become, if that is what works and this behavior lets me get away with certain things then I'll be that male teacher off the beaten path.
